AIM:

The white goods and appliances for the house were selected to giving an acceptable standard of performance for less energy and water use.

The white goods used throughout the house are 95% recyclable and create less greenhouse gases during operation.

STRATEGY:

Conserve Energy

Energy efficiency increases when the appliances used in the house enables the house to provide the same level of service to the occupants while using less energy.

The running cost of the house is reduced because the appliances are energy efficient and therefore use less electricity to operate.

Refrigeration accounts for about a quarter of the electricity consumption in a typical household. Refrigeration operates day and night so there is the potential to save on energy costs by having an energy efficient refrigerator.

Minimise the Use of New Resources

The main design direction with regard to conserving the natural resources used by the household was to examine the potential to reduce the household water consumption.

The water consumption of the house was monitored over a 24 month period in 2000 and 2001. During this monitoring period the Healthy Home consumed 229kL of water each year which equates to 627L/day. When compared with an average Gold Coast detached household consumption of 297kL/year (averaged over 68,200 residences) the Healthy Home residents are relatively stringent in their water consumption.
