ELEMENT:
Kennedy's Classic Aged Structural Timber Members
AIM:
Using recycled timber elements wherever possible in the house means that
there is a reduction of the use of new resources.
STRATEGY:
Minimise the Use of New Resources
Timber is easy to work with and requires little energy to convert into
forms that are useful for use in buildings. It is because of this that
timber can be used and reused extending its functional well beyond that
of many other materials with little cost to the environment.
Tongue and groove flooring, posts, railings, stairs, joinery, floor
and decking timber were all re-milled to make them safe and suitable to
be reused in the house. By using recycled and plantation timber elements
for the structural stability of the house, there is a reduction in the
demand for native or rainforest timber.
De-nailed stress graded recycled structural hardwood and decking timber
was used to reduce the embodied energy (initial energy) of the house.
Timber performs well under environmental criteria that measure the amount
of energy required for the production and transport, and the pollution
that arises from the production and installation of the material.
Maximise the Use of Sustainable Resources
Timber doors and windows from renewable forest plantation hoop pine
were installed throughout the home. Timber as a building material is renewable
because the source of timber is able to grow and regrow. This natural
resource is energy efficient, recyclable and bio-degradable.
