ELEMENT:
990 Watt Grundfos Electrical Water pump
AIM:
A pump is required to supply pressurised water to the Healthy Home from
the 22 000L primary rainwater tank located under the house.
STRATEGY:
Water Pressure
A method of supplying adequate water pressure and flow rates is required
for the practical, everyday use of rainwater. This was achieved at the
Healthy Home using a 990 Watt electrical water pump.
The pump, located next to the top of concrete tank, can provide water
at a maximum pressure of 222kPa (about 32 PSI), and a maximum flow rate
of 40 L/minute (0.66 L/second). These values are well above those required
by the National Plumbing and Drainage Standard (AS/NZS 3500.1.2:1998)
which specifies a minimum pressure of 50kPa, at flow rates of 0.10 L/second
for showers and toilets, and 0.30 L/second for a hose tap.
The suction intake pipe of the pump is situated 200mm above the bottom
of rainwater tank to ensure that any sediment in the tank is not drawn
into the pump. After the water is lifted by the pump, it passes through
a filter and a UV disinfection system before entering the Healthy Home's
internal plumbing.
Energy
The use of an electric pump in the Healthy Home produces a small energy
penalty over reticulated mains water, and consumes 1.6 kWhr per day.
