ELEMENT:
Pavilion plan house design
AIM:
The zoning of the rooms for the Healthy Home was aimed at providing
the most comfortable living conditions possible inside the building without
relying on electrical devices to provide comfort.
STRATEGY:
Optimise Passive Design
Open plan houses with vented high ceilings are ideal for sub tropical
climates.
The building is split into two double storey pavilions connected by a
breezeway. The breezeway facilitates vertical air movement (stack ventilation)
as well as horizontal (cross ventilation). Air can move vertically through
the breezeway and escape through clerestory windows at a high level.
The constant flow of air through the building cools the building fabric
and occupants. Careful planning and placement of windows and doors also
provides the occupants with the health benefits of natural ventilation.
A number of planning strategies for the house in relation to the site
were aimed at reducing the heat in living rooms due to sunlight from the
east and west. Rooms that are not occupied for long periods of time are
placed to the west. These rooms consist of bathrooms, utility spaces and
the carport. These transient rooms act as a buffer for the occupied rooms
from the westerly sun and heat gain. In addition windows on the western
side of the house are avoided.
