ELEMENT:

ISCO Automatic Water Sampler

AIM:

The ISCO sampler is part of the monitoring program of the Healthy Home that examines the effectiveness of the innnovative technologies used to decrease the environmental footprint of the home.

STRATEGY:

In the ISCO sampler water is distributed via a rotating arm, to one of 24 sample bottles. Each water sample, which has a volume of 750ml, is placed in it's own sterilised sample bottle. The ISCO operates for 24 hours taking one sample every hour, until all the bottles are full. The sample carousel is prepacked with ice to ensure the quality of the samples don't degrade over the 20-24 hour sampling period.

An ISCO automatic water sampler is used to collect water samples from the greywater system and is located at the front of the Healthy Home. When the ISCO is activated every two weeks, water is automatically pumped from the greywater system to the ISCO sampler, when the greywater pump out system becomes active (about once every 2 hours).

Once all the desired samples have been taken from the greywater system, they are taken to a laboratory. In the laboratory the quality of the water is analysed for bacteria, nutrents, salinity and other water quality criteria such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Suspended Solids and Turbidity. These parameters indicate how well the greywater system is performing, relative to the standards for end uses such as toilet flushing and surface irrigation.
