ELEMENT:

'Rain Dance' Water Filter

AIM:

The aim of the water management strategy at the Healthy Home is to decrease the demand for water from the mains water supply. This was accomplished through water efficient fittings and the installation of two rainwater tanks. The water in the rainwater tanks is treated so that it can be use for all applications within the house.

STRATEGY:

Protect Water Quality

To ensure the water in the rainwater tank is kept free of contaminants a number of devices have been installed at the Healthy Home including a wool filter. The filter consists on an internal wool filter and a hard plastic outer case. The wool stops any particle bigger than 20 microns in size (one micron, is one thousandth of a millimetre) from entering the UV disinfection unit.

The filter removes sand and sediment from the rainwater collected on the roof of the house. Sand and sediment in the water can make it unfit for drinking and prevent the UV disinfection system from effectively killing water borne pathogens. Sediment in the UV system acts a refuge for the pathogens, allowing them to survive the disinfection process.
