ELEMENT:

'Kennedy's Classic Aged Timber Members' Recycled Timber Deck

AIM:

An outdoors living space extends the usable living space of the house. The Queensland climate allows for favourable outdoor living conditions. Living spaces outdoors allow the occupants to interact with the external environment.

STRATEGY:

User Comfort

Comfortable outdoor spaces extend the internal living spaces to the outside, increasing the habitable areas of the house and site.

The deck is located to the north-east of the house to allow for adequate shading from direct sunlight and protection from heat gain. The deck is shaded for the majority of months of the year but also allows for a sunny location for cool winter mornings.

The shade cloth acts to both shade the deck from direct sunlight and provides privacy from neighbouring residences. The house itself provides shading to the deck from the low westerly afternoon sun angles.

Minimise the Use of New Resources

Recycled timber was used for the decking, joists and the bearers. The decking is prepared by removing the nails, re-milling and then re-finishing for safety ready for installation. The use of recycled timber greatly reduces the demand for native or rainforest timbers.

The embodied energy (initial energy) of the house is reduced due to the use of recycled timber elements. Timber also performs well under environmental criteria assesing the amount of energy required for the production and transport, and the pollution arising from the production and installation, of the material.
