A number of organisations have produced practical guides and assessment tools for people who want to make their own homes more sustainable. The names of some of these are included below, while others are available online. Check out the Sustainability Links page for more infomration on these online tools. Your Home Guide The Your Home guide is available free from the Australian Greenhouse
Office. To get a copy go to their web site and follow the instructions.
It includes a CD that contains the Your Home Technical Manual, which has
extensive information on sustainable house design. The request form is
available from the Australian Greenhouse Offices Your Home web site http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/yourhome/. Your Home Technical Manual This is a larger, more detailed, version of the Your Home Guide from
the Australian Greenhouse Office. Go to their web site, or contact them
via phone, to get information on purchasing this folder. A CD version
of this comes with the free Your Home guide, again from the Australian
Greenhouse Office's Your Home web site http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/yourhome/ The Australian Greenhouse Calculator This calculator can be used online (go to http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/
and search for Australian Greenhouse Calculator), or you can purchase
it as a booklet and CD-ROM computer program. It is used to calculate the
amount of energy that you use around the home and in the car. The output
includes detailed information about the amount of greenhouse and dangerous
gases that your energy consumption produces. It also includes suggestion
on how to minimise household energy use. Global Warming, Cool It! The Global Warming booklet contains hints and tips for reducing energy consumption around the home. It also contains comparisons of the greenhouse gases produced by various appliances around the home, e.g. microwaves ovens versus electric bench top cookers. Look in the Publications section of the Australian Greenhouse Office's web site http://www.greenhouse.gov.au for the online version, or order a hard copy. Enery Smart Home Designer CD The Energy Smart Home Designer CD will help you build a virtual home and test different energy savings options, such as different roof colours, levels of insulation and eave widths.
