Pavilion plan house design

AIM:

The two storey house consists of two main pavilions that are connected by a breezeway. The breezeway contains a stairway that links the lower level to the upper level of the house. The stairway acts to open up an atrium space in the building so that air can flow in the natural direction, from low to high. This is known as stack ventilation with air moving vertically through the house as it becomes warmer. A breeze can be created inside the house even if the outside air is calm.

Building elements that assist this flow of air are the portal frame structure, and the clerestory windows on the roof. The portal frame structure allows the building to be opened inside, with walls, windows and doors positioned to suit the flow of air. Clerestory windows placed high in the atrium space allow the heated air to escape into the atmosphere.
