Building Orientation

The traditional position of a house on a site is to orientate the front of the building to the street. The Healthy Home is orientated to true solar north and sits at an angle on the site rather than towards the street edge. Positioning the house in this way increases the opportunity to use natural day lighting inside. The demand for electric lighting is reduced during the day when natural day lighting is used to illuminate the inside. This solar orientation also increases the efficiency of the solar hot water system and the solar panels (i.e. photovoltaics).

The amount of direct sunlight entering the building can be controlled by using shading devices over the windows. Glare and heat entering through the windows can be modified while still allowing light to enter.
