ELEMENT: Sub-surface Irrigation AIM: When the Healthy Home was built a sub-surface irrigation system was installed in the permaculture garden. A sub-surface irrigation system is more water efficient than above ground sprinklers as evaporation is reduced and spray drift is eliminated. The sub-surface irrigation system consists of a porous hose that slowly leaks as water is passed through it. The hose is made from recycled car tyre rubber, which means that a minimum of new material is used in it's manufacture. Other surface irrigation sysems include trickle tape which is widely used in the farm irrigation industry. Blocking of pores/emitters is a common problem with subsurface systems and a sediment filter is highly recommended to remove suspended particles down to 20 microns. Click here for Technical Detail.
