ELEMENT: Solahart 'Black Chrome II' solar hot water system with a gas boost AIM: A solar hot water system uses energy produced by the sun to heat the water. An electrical booster can be used to heat water at times when the sun does not produce sufficient energy, for example, on cloudy days or at night. The building uses an 2.4 kW electric booster at times such as this. On average, 40 % of the total energy used by an average household is for the heating of hot water. Using a passive solar source to provide this household necessity cuts down the total energy demands of the house and reduces the greenhouse gas associated with the production of electricity (about 1 kg of CO2 per kWh of electricity) that would be used in an all electric system.
