ELEMENT: Concrete Pad footings providing foundations for the timber portal frame AIM: The foundations connect the building to the ground and provide stability. The types of foundations required to give a building stability depend on the type and nature of the earth that the building is bearing on. On the predominantly sandy soil at the Healthy Home site, pad foundations were used to reduce the need for large foundations. This in turn reduced the amount of soil that required excavation (and possible removal) and the amount of concrete needed to form the foundation. Recycled aggregate concrete was used in the footings. Using recycled materials reduced the overall energy needed to produce the foundations for the building. Click here for Technical Detail. |
