Exterior Doors ELEMENT: Finlaysons Timber and Hardware. Envirowood glazed timber doors and frames. AIM: The doors and frames are made from forest plantation hoop pine. Having materials that are from sustainable plantations reduces the demand for rainforest timbers that take many years (if ever) to regenerate. Ease of maintenance was a large factor for the selection of the door type. This reduces the time and ongoing costs associated in maintaining the doors in the future. The exterior doors have glazed openings to allow day light to enter the house. The glazed panels provide a view to the outside for occupant comfort and security. ELEMENT: James Hardie 'Breezway' Louvres with glass and timber blades AIM: Louvred windows can provide a large surface area opening for airflow into the building. Adjusting the angles of the lourvred blades can control the direction and amount of air that enters the building. The windows in the Healthy Home have been designed and positioned to improve the flow of air inside the building. The purpose of ventilation inside the house is to provide fresh air to the occupants, cool the building and cool the occupants. ELEMENT: Azurlite Glass AIM:
The design team selected a blue tinted glass to control the heat gain to the house while still allowing a good level of day lighting. The blue tinting is very subtle and does not affect the outlook from the house. The glazing to the south is not exposed to direct sunlight. To reduce the overall cost of the glazing, the windows to the south have clear rather than tinted glass. Click here for Technical Detail. |
